£32 – £36k pro rata (depending on experience)

The Company of the Merchant Adventurers of York are looking for a part time Charity Executive/Administrator.  This is a part time role of 20 hours per week but with significant flexibility required to oversee major seasonal activities.  Salary £36K pro rata.  This is a 2 year role with the option to extend based on performance and the Company’s ability to raise funds to sustain the post long term.

The role will assist the Charity Committee and Company to deliver its charitable objectives in encouraging and furthering the education of business and enterprise in the City of York and surrounding area.  This is in the delivery of events to raise money, the support to programmes of learning and overseeing the administration in cooperation with delivery partners such as the University of York, York College and the York  Independent/State School Partnership (ISSP).  The Charity Committee is responsible for overseeing and implementing the Enterprise Education objectives undertaken by the Company through the 1988 Trust and our aim is to ‘Inspire the next generation of Merchant Adventurers.’


The official objective from the Charitable Trust Deed is:

‘The advancement of education generally in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and more particularly advancing education in the study of commercial and industrial organisations and activities.’


This part-time role has two main foci:

  1. Coordinating, with partners, the delivery of education activities across all ages.
  2. Assisting the Charity Committee in the delivery of fundraising events.


Key deliverables:

  • Establish and deliver a ‘Merchants Experience’ to York primary schools; a discovery of history to age 8 – 11 year old children.
  • Coordinate the deliver of a Merchant Adventurers Enterprise programme with ISSP; a delivery of extra-curricular business learning to 16 year old York school children
  • Administer and coordinate a series of Discovery lectures; Business, Science and Arts to York residents and an online world audience.
  • Working with the Charity Committee to develop and meet ambitious targets and continually develop the fundraising activity.
  • Delivering a programme of well planned and marketed fundraising events (currently two/three major events per year). Attending as appropriate.
  • Overseeing our relationship with a number of delivery partner organisations.
  • Direct liaison with Schools, Colleges and Universities.
  • Ensuring the impactful delivery of educational activities with an understanding of the school curriculum.
  • Look for new opportunities to drive fundraising. Develop a strong network of both individual, community and corporate contacts to assist with developing new opportunities.
  • Contribute to the marketing and communication of our agenda and activities to both to local businesses and members. Promoting event ticket sales.
  • Engage with members to be volunteers in our education activities.
  • Contribute to and deliver against annual budgets, targets and plans.
  • Administration, tracking and record keeping in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Secretary to the Charity Committee.

  • Full UK driving licence and willing to travel.
  • Flexible working days and attendance at events out of hours occasionally.

The Charity Executive will be responsible to the Charity Committee and will be line managed by the Clerk.
