The Company, and its unique medieval Hall, date from 1357. The Clerk, as Chief Executive, is responsible to the Court, as the governing body for all aspects of the Company’s activities.
Incorporated by Royal Charter, the Company is a highly respected membership organisation which seeks to develop its influential role in the economic life of York and the surrounding region. It has strong links with many London Livery Companies and Guilds throughout the UK. The Hall is a scheduled Ancient Monument and accredited museum and aims to be one of the premier tourist attractions in the historic City of York.
The Clerk leads an established team and main responsibilities include: developing and implementing the strategic vision for the Company and its charities, the management of the Hall, financial management, the administration of its properties and commercial operations as well as the planning and organisation of an established calendar of social and ceremonial events. Future plans include development of its charitable activities in education and entrepreneurship, the further development of the museum in order to increase visitors’ understanding of the Company’s history, building on and extending external relationships, and generating increased income from visitors, its café and retail operations in addition to the hire of the Hall for private functions.
This opportunity arises from the retirement of the current Clerk. It is a varied and demanding role requiring proven leadership ability, commercial acumen and excellent communication and relationship management skills. The Clerk plays an important ambassadorial role working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders and must possess the personal qualities needed to represent the Company on formal and informal occasion. It is expected that the new Clerk will take up the appointment in the late summer.
